Hidden Jungle Path to Wat Pha Lat & Doi Suthep

🌿 How to Enjoy Nature to Doi Suthep

(Easy Trekking Guide from Chiang Mai)

Chiang Mai is not only temples and cafés — it’s also nature, peaceful forest, and hidden trails.

If you want a simple adventure + culture in one day, this is one of the best experiences:
👉 Walk from the base of the mountain → through jungle → to Wat Pha Lat → continue to Doi Suthep Temple

And yes…
👉 You don’t need to be a professional hiker.

📍 Start Point – From Old City to Trail Entrance

From Chiang Mai Old City or downtown, the easiest way is:

🚕 Take Grab / Bolt / Taxi
📍 Destination: Basecamp Coffee Club (start point area)

👉 This is where many travelers stop:

  • Use restroom
  • Grab coffee ☕
  • Prepare water & snacks

🥾 Trail Start – The Monk’s Trail (Wat Pha Lat Trail)

From Basecamp, you will find the Monk’s Trail (look for orange cloth tied to trees).

🧭 Step-by-step:

  1. Enter the trail (clear path, not confusing)
  2. Walk uphill slowly (30–45 minutes)
  3. Follow the orange ribbons (important!)
  4. Enjoy jungle, birds, and fresh air

👉 The path is:

  • Not too steep
  • Good for beginners
  • Some rocky steps, but manageable

🏯 Stop 1 – Wat Pha Lat (Hidden Jungle Temple)

After around 30–45 minutes, you will arrive at one of the most peaceful temples in Chiang Mai.

📍 About Wat Pha Lat

  • Located around 530 meters above sea level
  • Built during the Lanna Kingdom period
  • Originally a resting place for monks walking to Doi Suthep

👉 In the past:
Monks used this path to travel up the mountain.
Wat Pha Lat was like a “midway spiritual stop.”

🌿 What Makes It Special?

  • Hidden in the jungle 🌳
  • Quiet, calm, not crowded
  • Small waterfall next to temple 💧
  • Moss-covered stones, very natural

👉 This is a place for:

  • Meditation
  • Slow walking
  • Taking peaceful photos

🧭 Continue to Doi Suthep Temple

After Wat Pha Lat, you have 2 options:

Option 1 (Recommended for most people):

👉 Take Grab / Red truck (songthaew) up to Doi Suthep

Option 2 (For strong walkers):

👉 Continue hiking (additional 1.5–2 hours uphill)

🏔️ Doi Suthep Temple – The Final Destination

📍 Height: about 1,050 meters above sea level

This is the most important temple in Chiang Mai.

✨ What to Expect:

  • Golden pagoda (very beautiful)
  • City view from the mountain
  • Sacred atmosphere
  • 306 steps staircase (or cable car option)

🎒 What to Bring

Keep it simple:

  • 💧 Water (very important)
  • 👟 Good walking shoes
  • 🧢 Hat / sunglasses
  • 🌿 Light backpack
  • 📱 Phone (GPS / photos)

👕 What to Wear
